The Agency of 2027: How AI Savings Become Margin, and Why a White Label Web Development Agency Still Matters.

AI is making agency delivery faster. The harder question is who keeps the savings: your agency, your client, or nobody at all.

That was the core of Teamwork.com's recent webinar, The Agency of 2027: Turning AI Savings Into Margin. Our team attended, and the takeaways landed close to home. As a white label web development agency, Webmastered builds websites behind the scenes for other agencies every day, and we've watched AI change how that work gets done.

Here's what agency owners should know, and what we think it means for how you build your team.

Agencies are using AI. Few can tell if it's paying off.

AI use is climbing fast. SPI Research's 2026 report, shared in the webinar, found AI now touches 43.6% of services projects, nearly double the year before. Firms using AI on almost every project delivered 91% on time, versus 76% for firms that barely use it.
But faster isn't the same as more profitable. The numbers the presenters shared tell the story:

What agency leaders said

  • AI saves them time - 85%
  • Can say whether AI helps generate revenue - Fewer than 1 in 3
  • Still price fully or partly by the hour - 76%
  • Can't plan capacity even for people alone - 53%
  • Can clearly compare AI vs. human delivery cost - 0%
  • In short: agencies feel the speed, but most can't see where the money goes.

Margin is lost during delivery, and found out too late

One example from the webinar stuck with us: a project sold at a 35% margin that finished at 19%. Nothing dramatic happened. The margin simply leaked out while the work was being done.

The usual culprits are familiar to any agency:

  • Optimistic estimates that don't survive real-world delivery.
  • Senior people doing junior work, because no one else is free or it feels faster.
  • Scope creep that never goes through change control.
  • Client delays that leave people booked and idle, push billing out, and stall the next project.

The real problem is visibility. Sales expects a healthy margin, delivery focuses on shipping, and finance focuses on invoicing. By the time anyone sees the true number at month-end, it's too late to fix.

The hourly-pricing trap

If you bill by the hour and AI cuts the hours, you've just cut your own invoice. The client gets the savings, and your margin can actually shrink.

The presenters argued the real win is optionality. Once you know what AI-assisted delivery really costs, you get to choose where the savings go:

  • Keep the price, grow the margin. A fixed-fee or deliverable-based price holds while your delivery cost falls.
  • Lower the price, win more work. Compete for projects other agencies can't afford to take on.

What you shouldn't do is let old timesheets and pricing habits make that decision for you.

From pyramid to diamond: people and AI, side by side

The traditional agency pyramid, with many juniors at the base, may turn into a diamond as AI agents take on repeatable, lower-level tasks. But the webinar was clear that AI doesn't replace the team. It changes what the team spends its time on.

In a sample retainer, the presenters suggested agents could handle around half the work, with strategists reviewing and delivering. That keeps the fee fixed while delivery costs drop. Agencies that sell white label SEO or white label digital marketing retainers will recognize the pattern: much of that work is repeatable reporting and analysis.

Two cautions came with it. First, utilization numbers can mislead: someone using AI well may look less busy while producing more. Second, freed-up time only has value if you fill it with profitable work. Expect a short margin dip while you build the setup; the presenters framed it as an investment, not a failure.

Where to start: one deliverable, one client

You don't need a new platform to begin. The webinar's advice was refreshingly simple:

  1. Pick one deliverable that's safe for AI to assist with, like a monthly report or a page build.
  2. Measure the split. Track what the AI does, what people do, and what each costs.
  3. Add AI to your capacity plan. A spreadsheet is fine to start.
  4. Test on one project or client and track the real margin at the end.

The presenters' rough estimate was that shifting junior-level work to agents could lift business-level margin by close to a third in many larger agencies. They were clear it's an estimate, not a promise. Your own numbers from one test will tell you more.

So, do agencies still need a white label web development agency?

Yes, but the reason has changed. You no longer outsource just to get more hands. You outsource to get people who already know how to work with AI, so you get the margin benefits without building the setup yourself.

AI can draft a page layout or generate code. It can't decide if that layout fits your client's brand, catch the bug that breaks checkout on mobile, or take responsibility when something goes wrong. Every AI-assisted workflow in the webinar still had a person reviewing and signing off. That reviewer is what most agencies are short on, especially those already reselling white label digital marketing or white label SEO and now adding websites to the mix.

That's where Webmastered fits in:

  • White label web design and development. As your white label web development agency, we build under your brand on WordPress (Elementor, Divi, Avada, Gutenberg), Shopify, Webflow, Wix, GoHighLevel and more. Your client never sees us.
  • AI-assisted, human-reviewed delivery. Our developers use AI to speed up builds, and a real person checks every page before it reaches you.
  • Dedicated developers and designers. Add a full-time team member without the hiring, training and overhead.
  • Predictable costs that protect your margin. A flat $30/hour for custom development, and a 5-page Basic Website for $499. That makes fixed-fee pricing to your clients much easier to hold.
  • Your senior people stay on strategy. We take the production work, so your strategists and account leads can focus on clients and growth.

The agencies that win in 2027 won't be the ones with the most AI tools. They'll be the ones who decide where the savings go, and who have the right team to deliver.
